Derry: We've Got To Take Responsibility Individually

22 February 2015

Shaun Derry admitted that his players need to start taking individual responsibility for their performances after a second hard to take 2-1 defeat in the space of a week.

Having taken the lead through a fantastic Garry Thompson strike on 10 minutes, Notts failed to make their dominance in the game count and conceded two poor goals to lose 2-1 away to Fleetwood Town on Saturday and Derry admitted that his side had to start turning performances into results.

“We’ve entered a run of games where we’ve demanded results and with the greatest respect to the opponent that we’ve come up against today, I felt that we were coming here to get a victory and we should have got one,” the Notts boss said after the game.

“I’ve just said to the lads there, as well as we’ve played, and I thought we played well, I thought we played well on Tuesday night, we’ve played well twice and lost two games and it just goes to show how cruel and ruthless this game is.

“I’m looking over my shoulder at the minute and saying it’s tight and it’s getting tighter and we’re getting tighter towards the bottom end,” he added. “I feel that with the year that we’ve had up to now, the season that we’ve had up to here, some would say that we deserve to be there, well yeah we do at the minute because we’re not winning enough games.

“There’s certain parts of the game where, when you’re on the attack and all the pressure is going into the Fleetwood side, you have to get that second goal and we’ve not been clinical enough, at all.

“By no means have we been ruthless or clinical in the chances that we’ve created today. I felt we created more chances today than we’ve done for many a week and there was a lot of positive play, but you know what, it means nothing, it doesn’t mean anything when you lose games.

“I’ve always said that I’d much rather us win ugly than lose pretty and what we’ve done is we’ve lost pretty today and I don’t like it. I don’t like the fact that Fleetwood had two, maybe three chances in the whole of the game and they’ve scored two goals.

“That isn’t right and there’s a sense of responsibility that, individually, you’ve got to take. You’ve got to take it on your shoulders and you’ve got to accept responsibility and we haven’t done that and you know what, we haven’t done that for a number of weeks now and that’s why results have been what they have been.”
