Reserves Off To A Winning Start

9 September 2015

Jimmy Spencer and Lartey Sarpong were on target in either half as Notts County Reserves started their Final Third Development League campaign with a 2-0 win over Grimsby Town Reserves.

Grimsby fielded a strong side with first-team players Richard Tait, Craig Clay, Jack Mackreth and Jon-Paul Pittman all starting.

But there was little the experienced contingent could do to stop Notts taking an early lead when Scot Bennett's inch-perfect pass over the visiting defence was controlled with a superb first touch by Spencer, who showed his experience by rounding the goalkeeper with ease and rolling the ball into an empty net.

Montel Gibson's fierce effort from 10 yards was saved by Callum Bastock in the visiting goal before the winger rolled a shot wide of the post after being slipped in by Filip Valencic's incisive pass.

The lead was doubled in th second half as youngster Sarpong prodded into the bottom corner at full-stretch from 18 yards to continue his impressive form which began in pre-season.

Nicky Wroe volleyed wide whilst goalscorers Spencer and Sarpong curled efforts the wrong side of the post from outside the area.

It could have been 3-0 when Jake Payling's cross found Valencic but the Slovenian attacker crashed his shot against the underside of the bar from close range.

Grimsby threatened to spoil Kevin Pilkington's clean sheet, but the goalkeeper produced a couple of superb stops to deny James Wroot and Josh Venney from a few yards out.

Pitman headed wide from a corner as Notts saw out the game for an impressive win ahead of their trip to Hartlepool in the next league outing.
