Reserves Hammer Rotherham 7-0

28 October 2015

Notts County's reserve team continued their imperious form with a 7-0 dismantling of Rotherham United at Arnold Town on Tuesday afternoon.

With a number of first-team players getting 90 minutes under their belt, this was a pleasing afternoon for Senior Professional Development Phase Coach Richard Dryden and first-team manager Ricardo Moniz.

Colby Bishop and Filip Valencic helped themselves to a brace each whilst Genaro Snijders and Jimmy Spencer were also on target.
Ronan Murray began his comeback from a long-term injury with an appearance from the bench and a goal of his own.

Notts dominated throughout against a youthful Millers side and Valencic should have opened the scoring on the quarter hour mark when a long ball found the winger just outside the box. His first touch took him past the central defender but he curled his shot past the goalkeeper and the right-hand post.

However, just a minute later and County did have the lead through Snijders. The Dutchman raced onto a smart pass from Spencer and poked the ball beyond the onrushing goalkeeper.

Lartey Sarpong was next to try his luck but saw his shot blocked by a crowd of defenders before the Rotherham goalkeeper smothered an attempt from Snijders and another effort from Sarpong.

Bishop doubled the lead shortly afterwards, rolling the ball past a defender from Snijders' cut-back and finishing coolly into the bottom corner, past the outstretched hand of the goalkeeper.

Spencer saw chances come and go, firing past the post on two occasions before getting himself a goal with a smart header from Haydn Hollis' cross which crept inside the far post.

Valencic made it four before half-time, curling superbly into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area after the visitors failed to clear a corner.

The second half started as the first had finished, with Notts dominating possession and creating chances. Snijders came close to doubling his tally, forcing the Rotherham ‘keeper making another good save before denying Rob Milsom a goal.

Valencic bagged his second with a deflected effort to make it 5-0, giving Dryden the chance to hand Murray a return from a long injury lay-off. The former Ipswich man replaced Spencer and it didn't take long for him to get back in the groove with a goal.

Taylor McKenzie's hold-up play gave Murray the chance to showcase his predatory instincts and rifle into the roof of the net from eight yards out.

Not content with a six-goal lead, Notts got their seventh a minute later as Bishop rounded off the scoring with a low, curling effort which found the back of the net via the post.

Richard Dryden was understandably delighted with the performance and result, saying: "There was a lot of good football, a lot of one-touch passing and some good finishing.

"We probably took our foot off the gas a little in the second half and Rotherham could have nicked a goal or two but we got over that spell and got back to it.

"We were up against a fairly young team but we're usually playing against at least eight or nine professionals from other clubs.
"That can be a challenge as their young lads can be really up for the game but we've passed the ball well, our movement was fantastic in the final third and I think we fully deserved our seven goals."

Dryden was also pleased to see Ronan Murray mark his comeback from a lengthy injury with a goal after coming on as a substitute.
"Ronan Murray has been out for a long time and he was itching to get his 30 minutes so we gave him that and we're delighted that he's managed to get himself a goal.

"Rob Milsom has been involved in the last three games for us now and his performance has improved each time. He's winning tackles, driving through the middle of the park so it will be good to get him into the first team," he added.

The reserves are in action again next Tuesday afternoon in the Final Third Development League Cup away at Chesterfield. The game will be played at the ProAct Stadium and will kick off at 2pm. Stay tuned to Magpie PlayerHD for reaction and extended highlights.
