Report: Carlton Town 0-4 Notts County

22 July 2014

A young Notts County side overcame a Carlton Town outfit that included a host of ex-Magpies youth team players 4-0 in a pre-season friendly at Stoke Lane.

Braces from Nicky Wroe and trialist Elliott Whitehouse secured the victory on an evening where many of the squad’s inexperienced players gave a very good account of themselves.

The Notts squad included club legend Mike Edwards, who had been training with the squad to build up his fitness ahead of the new season.

The opening goal arrived in the 40th minute through Wroe, as the midfielder found the net with a superb placed finish into the bottom corner.

Moments later, Whitehouse doubled the advantage by rounding off a fine passing move with an excellent strike beyond former Notts stopper Liam Mitchell.

Mitchell pulled off a number of top saves either side of the break, including double saves to deny Tyrell Waite and Whitehouse.

There was nothing he could do to stop Whitehouse’s third goal in two games, which saw the midfielder latch onto a wonderful Greg Tempest diagonal and calmly fire home.

Another trialist, Adam Dawson, created the Magpies’ fourth of the evening with an inventive piece of skill and lobbed pass that allowed Wroe to beat Mitchell from range.

It was another good workout for the squad but the preparations for the new season are set to be stepped up at the weekend when the team travels to FC Halifax Town.
