Throwback Thursday: Anglo Italian Cup Success 20-Years Ago Today

19 March 2015

The media team delve into the club’s archive...

20 years ago today the Magpies travelled to Wembley to face Italian side Ascoli.

The Magpies revenged the previous year’s Wembley final defeat to Brescia by lifting the Anglo Italian Cup in 1995 with a 2-1 win over Ascoli.

The Italian side were also struggling in their domestic competitions, but did include German international forward Oliver Bierhoff.

Notts took an early lead in controversial fashion. Midfielder Andy Legg hurled in one of his world record breaking long throws into the box and a slight touch from Tony Agana put Notts ahead.

Ascoli rallied after Notts didn’t clear, but went ahead before the break with a bullet header from striker Devon White.

Captain Phil Turner lifted the trophy and Notts remain the only English team to win the competition in the more recent four seasons.

Magpie Player subscribers can watch extended highlights from the game by clicking here. And fans will have read a feature in Tuesday’s The Mag with insight from an Ascoli fan, as well as Andy Legg and Paul Devlin.

The club would like to thank Bowles Associates, JMS Photography, Action Images, Dan Westwell and the Nottingham Post for supporting the NCFC History archives.

Look out for more classic photographs every Thursday.
