Derry: Murray Deserved His Nomination

4 April 2014

Manager Shaun Derry has paid tribute to striker Ronan Murray for the way that he has bounced back for Notts County after a dark night in Peterborough.

Murray was dismissed for an off the ball incident at London Road in a fixture back in January and the Magpies went on to lose the game 4-3.

The frontman was required to watch on from the sidelines as Notts’ form dipped but made his intentions clear of making amends.

Since returning to the starting 11 against Tranmere Rovers, Murray has done just that by tucking away five goals in just four games.

The 22-year-old was shortlisted for the Sky Bet League 1 Player of the Month earlier this week and although he missed out on the accolade to Coventry City’s Callum Wilson, Derry has been delighted with the Irishman’s impact.

“He took a bit of a hammering having got himself sent off against Peterborough and it affected his confidence,” explained the boss.

“But, I’ve always believed in Ronan, from the first moment I set eyes on him I knew that he could be a pivotal player for us.

“He sets a standard in training and carries it onto a football field as well, which is even more important.

“Now the goals are coming and I don’t want to tempt fate obviously, because you want him to continue in the same vein for form.

“For me, I just want him to enjoy his football, I say that to the lads - go and enjoy working hard for each other.

“Him and Jimmy have been fantastic for us and they set the standard, I always look at the centre forwards to start us on our way and I feel they’ve delivered.”
