Gavin Mahon has revealed the reasons why he signed a new deal at Meadow Lane that will keep him at the club for a further year.
Mahon arrived at Meadow Lane in 2011.12 and went on to perform 34 times in the black and white stripes.
The 35-year-old announced that he did have other clubs chasing him but believes that the Magpies can go one better next term and challenge for promotion.
He told Magpie Player: "It's been a bit of a strange two or three months, but it's all done now, so I can go away and get ready for pre-season.
"I had one or two others offers just as good, but when you get to my age you want to be in a team where you will be challenging and in squads where you want to be successful.
"I enjoy the coaching staff here and I think we've got half a chance here, so that's why I decided to stay.
"I said to the gaffer at the end of the season that we've got a good spine of the team here, still under contract."
The former Watford skipper also believes a small squad would benefit the squad this time round.
He said: "There will be new boys coming in and lads going out, but the core of the players are there and you think if can bring one or two more in and trim that squad, because I thought it was to big last season.
"I think the manager wants a good solid squad of 22 or 24.
"Hopefully we can do one better this season. It's good to have signed for next season."
