Gary Jones Still Has The Quality And Can Be A Big Player For Notts County

8 August 2014

New Notts County midfielder Gary Jones still has plenty to offer at the age of 37, says manager Shaun Derry.

Jones has agreed a one-year deal at Meadow Lane and will be available for selection when Notts face Preston North End on Saturday afternoon.

The experienced central midfielder certainly made a big impression on Notts fans in his first game in the Black and White stripes - a pre-season encounter with Osasuna.

Jones scored a stunning volley and set up another goal in the 2-0 victory and Derry believes the performance highlighted just what the player is all about.

“Everyone who has followed League 1 and League 2 football knows who he is and what he’s brought to each club that he’s played at,” the gaffer told Magpie Player.

“He’s been training with us and the Osasuna game was his first 70 minutes of pre-season so he’s playing a bit catch-up.

“Judging by the quality of his goal, you can see the quality that he possesses.

“As a midfielder, I know he’s got a number next to him in terms of his age but I feel he brings a lot of energy to every team that he’s played for.

“More than energy, he brings quality and he’s a lad who I think can really benefit us - not just as a team but as a football club.

“I’m on about bringing the right type of characters into the group and when you’ve got experience in abidance like Gary, then we’ve got to look at it very closely.”

Jones is in line to make his first competitive appearance for the Magpies this weekend. For full Preston ticket details, click here.
