Fighting spirit delivered Notts County’s best win under manager Shaun Derry, as they came from behind to defeat Sheffield United 2-1 at Meadow Lane.
The biggest home crowd of the campaign so far witnessed another committed performance from the Magpies, who moved within a point of 20th placed Tranmere Rovers.
Goals from Enoch Showunmi and Mark Fotheringham completed a hard-fought comeback to make it six points from six in 2014.
Derry was delighted with his team’s passion to fight back after a disappointing opening to the game.
He said: “That’s the best win we’ve had since we’ve come in, the way we responded after letting ourselves down in the first five minutes and the way we really stuck to it in the last 10 minutes when it was backs against the wall.
“You don’t get that fighting spirit overnight, you get that through time and we’ve managed to implement what our beliefs are in the two-and-a-half months that we’ve been here.
“Slowly but surely we’re getting there, we’re not the finished article by any stretch of the imagination and there’s still mistakes being made, which disappoints me, but gradually we’re getting to where I want us to be.
“When we came in whoever was in the bottom four, if they had any inclination to get out of it they needed to show fight and determination and togetherness.
“We’re doing just that at the minute but we’re still in the bottom four – only just – but we’ve got to carry on now.
“I’ve said to the lads that they can’t take for granted what’s happening at the moment they have to come in on Monday morning and do the same stuff every day – it takes time.”
