English Channel Challenge For Team Magpies Benjamin

24 July 2014

Team Magpies member Benjamin Staniforth is aiming to complete an incredible 1,344 lengths of the Hucknall Leisure Centre swimming pool in order to raise money for Wish Upon A Star...

The seven-year-old will be swimming the same distance as the English Channel in August and swimming 64 lengths a day, one mile per day,  in a gruelling 21-day challenge.

His Mum Claire told the Official Site: “After discussing it and agreeing it would take a lot of time and dedication to train for this great challenge we decided to do the event for charity, there needed to be a drive for Benjamin to train so hard.

“After talking to him about many charities and what they do, Benjamin chose when You Wish Upon A Star. He wanted to help ill children live their wishes and be happy.”

Training is well underway with Benjamin getting up at 6am and swimming before classes at school.

The event will finish on August 31st with a fundraising day and Nottingham Paralympian gold medalist Richard Whitehead will be in attendance supporting the young Notts fan.

She added: “Benjamin is very excited about completing the event and has been working extremely hard to build his swimming up to the level he has done. He wants to help other people through the amazing skills he has.

“Benjamin is a very special young boy who puts helping others first. He is a great inspiration to his dad and me and couldn't wish for a more wonderful son.”

The challenge has already raised an outstanding £1,310.27 and you can sponsor him by visiting his Just Giving Page by clicking here.

It’s hoped the money will give the chance to send two children to Lapland at Christmas.

Everyone at Meadow Lane would like to wish Benjamin all the very best during the challenge and congratulate him on his fundraising so far.
