Manager Shaun Derry has told Notts County fans not to write off their team’s hopes of Sky Bet League 1 survival and has expressed that “the battle is far from over”.
Last weekend’s disappointing loss to Shrewsbury Town was a huge blow for the Magpies, who head into the weekend’s game against Play-Off contenders Rotherham United four points adrift of safety.
39 points remain up for grabs in the remaining 13 games – every one of them huge.
“This is exactly what I knew I’d be inheriting and I said from day one that this would not be an easy job,” said Derry.
“It’s a job that I feel very capable of doing every single day – my standards are high and I expect everyone else to follow those standards.
“If they do we’ll stay up and we’ll get out of it.
“I said as soon as I came in that the players I inherited and the one or two I brought in are good enough to stay in this division and I stand by that.
“This is probably the biggest battle of their careers, because everybody’s now at cross-points.
“There’s players out of contract and players that need to stay at this level to get another club – this is it, it’s judgment time for them.
“I’ve always relished a battle and two years ago people said I was dead and buried playing in the Premier League for QPR and we stayed up on the last day of the season.
“These stories happen and if it doesn’t happen to us this season it’ll happen to somebody else – let that team be Notts County.”
Notts face a tough challenge at the New York Stadium against Rotherham United this weekend.
