Manager Shaun Derry’s happiest moment on Bank Holiday Monday was the full time whistle, as Notts County beat Crawley Town 1-0.
In a tense, nail-biting affair, Notts had to scrap for their lives to hold onto the points, which were secured by Jimmy Spencer’s superb 34th minute header.
Crawley put the Magpies under some intense pressure in the second half but committed defending and some outstanding goalkeeping secured the victory.
Notts now head into the final two fixtures just one point adrift of the sides outside the bottom four.
“It was horrible and I didn’t enjoy that one bit - that was probably the worst I’ve been on the sideline,” said Derry.
“What an afternoon it was but we really needed to dig in there.
“Full credit to Crawley, because their season is done and dusted with really, but they came and gave us an almighty task.
“They put us on the back foot after half time and I said to the lads that there’d be times where they’d really have to defend for their lives.
“With a little bit of luck, we’ve managed to come out on top and I’ve got to say about the character of the boys, this is exactly what I wanted in the delivery.”
