Derry: Everybody Knows Their Jobs

21 September 2014

Manager Shaun Derry spoke to Magpie Player after our 0-0 draw with Oldham Athletic at Meadow Lane on Saturday...

Having seen his side claim a third successive draw in Sky Bet League 1, Derry spoke to BBC Radio Nottingham's Colin Slater after the game and admitted that it wasn't a vintage performance from his side, but that he was delighted with how his players dug in.

The Notts boss told Magpie Player: "I think if we’re honest with ourselves, we’d say we were a little disappointing today, but at the same time if you’d asked me a week ago if we’d have played three teams and conceded one goal I’d have snapped your hand off with that.

"We are what we are, we haven’t got a Grealish, we haven’t got a McGregor in the camp, who can drop his shoulder and score from 35 yards and breeze past three or four players.

"They’re the cards we’ve got and we’re absolutely making the most of it and I’m absolutely delighted with the bunch. I really am, I’m delighted with the result."

Derry was also quick to point out how far his side have come even this season, adding: "We lost to Fleetwood here a few weeks back, one-nil. It could be said it was a similar type of game. I felt we were better today than against Fleetwood mind, but we lost that and four weeks later we’ve managed to get a point and it could be a big point for us.

"We pride ourselves on the defensive work. I thought all four of the defenders today, we made a change with Muzzy coming in, but everybody knows their jobs, the two in front today, everyone knows their defensive jobs and you’re hoping for a little bit upfront and we didn’t get that today, but I’m not putting the blame on them because it could have been quite easily a centre-half who rose and scored a header for us and everyone would have took it.

"But you get these games, I’ve just looked at the results there and there’s been some strange results today in our league and we’ve managed to stay unbeaten, which is great for us."
