You know that a footballer has worked hard on the pitch when he cannot muster the energy to celebrate a goal.
That was the case for John Cofie after he netted the Magpies’ equaliser in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Crewe Alexandra.
Cofie worked tirelessly throughout, harrying defenders and running the channels, and fully deserved his goal.
The striker, who joined the club on loan from Manchester United on Friday afternoon, intercepted a pass out of defence and rifled into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Although he enjoyed his debut finish, Cofie admitted that he had to rein in his celebration.
“It was unbelievable, to be fair, and if I had a bit more energy I would’ve celebrated a bit more,” he said.
“I was a little bit tired so I just had to put my hand up, but I really enjoyed it.
“Thinking back, it was a bit of a weak shot and I could have passed it to Campbell-Ryce on the right, but I’m eager to score goals.
“It was like a pass back and I’ve got to do better next time.”
Cofie is determined to prove himself at senior level, having been a regular on the scoresheet for the Red Devils’ in the youth team and the reserves.
He said: “It’s the step up from boys to men’s football for me and hopefully I can prove myself here.
“I’m looking to go back to training next week and just forget about this.
“Obviously, I’m happy I scored but it’s onto the next one now.”
