Notts Youth Team had another disappointing afternoon after losing 4-1 to third-placed Scunthorpe United at Highfields, despite having a large bulk of possession throughout the game.

The Under 18s were 3-0 down at the break with the Irons finishing clinically. A much improved second-half saw Under 16s striker Paulos Beraki tap home a Jack Golding cross, but United scored their fourth in the final seconds of the game.

The result left Head of Academy Coaching Andy McMillan frustrated after his side started the match well.

He told the Official Site: “I’m bitterly disappointed. We started the first half really well. We dominated and plenty of pressure in front of their goal, but we didn’t track the runners when they’ve counter-attacked and our heads have gone down.

“I have no idea why we suddenly lose our confidence as they aren’t put under pressure. We try to get to get the ball down and we know there will be mistakes. They are young lads and they will learn from them.

“To lose the game with that score line was a bit harsh. I didn’t think it was a 4-1 match, but they took their chances.

“We had a chat at half-time and we looked sharper in the second half and the young kid Paulos has come on and done really well. The tempo was good.

“There are good kids in the squad, but for some reason we have a lack of confidence.

“We will keep working away. The lads work hard on the training session. It’s now up to them to step up to the mark. We have no game next week, so we will be working them hard next week.”

McMillan also thanked supporters that visited Highfields. He added: “I had a look across and it’s great to have the fans to come down in terrible weather conditions and we all appreciate their support.

“It’s just a shame we didn’t get the right result for them. I think they can see that we are trying to produce players that play the right way.”

The Youth Team have been drawn at home to Peterborough United in the FA Youth Cup.

Look out for details of the match on the Official Site once they have been confirmed.
