We played well

16 November 2016

Notts County manager John Sheridan was pleased with his side’s performance after the Magpies beat Boreham Wood 2-0 in their Emirates FA Cup first-round replay.

Goals from Jonathan Forte and Aaron Collins secured Notts’ passage to round two, where they will host League One side Peterborough United.

“I thought we played really well,” Sheridan said. “It was a tricky game for us, especially after Saturday, but the performance was good, we dominated the game and played some good stuff.

“The most pleasing thing was the performance of the players who haven’t been involved much of late: Stanley Aborah, Genaro Snijders and Graham Burke.

“Those three were excellent and showed an attitude which will give me a problem when I pick my team for Saturday.

“Credit to Boreham Wood, they gave us two tough games. Their manager and supporters can be proud of their team."

Notts took the lead through Forte in the 25th minute but did not add to their advantage until Collins’ terrific strike with the last kick of the game.

The manager said: “At 1-0 up you’re always on edge so I would have preferred him to take it to the corner.

“I shouted ‘What are you doing?’ and then ‘Great goal!’ straight after. I had to change my mind with how good a goal it was!”

The Magpies now face a home double-header in League Two against Newport County on Saturday and Cambridge United next Tuesday and the manager is determined to use the FA Cup result to build momentum in the league.

Sheridan said: “We have two more home games coming up now and I’d like to think we are going to try and get six points.

“We know the league is our priority. We want to stay in and around the top end of the table so we need to pick up points from both of those games.”
