Notts County have announced that club captain Michael O’Connor ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in the Easter Monday match against Portsmouth.

O’Connor sustained the injury to his right knee following a coming-together with an opponent.

Initial scans suggested a ruptured ACL and this was confirmed by a surgeon earlier today.

Notts manager Kevin Nolan said: “We are all devastated for Michael, who is a huge influence for us on and off the field.

“Everyone at the club will do everything they can to ensure he comes back stronger from this.

“While he may be facing a while on the sidelines, he has a huge role to play as captain of this football club and he will be heavily involved in everything we do going forward.”

Notts’ Head of Sports Science and Medicine, John Wilson, added: “This is obviously a long-term injury but with hard work, dedication and the correct management I’m sure Michael will make a successful return to training and playing.

“Injuries like these are tough but this is a club with community principles. We will all pull together and do the very best we can for him.”
